Do-Gooder Tries but Does Wrong

A man who thought he was protecting two children instead was interfering where he shouldn't have, police said.  The incident occurred at 3:30 p.m. Friday near Will-Moore Elementary School in Bismarck.  The man, who police said was highly intoxicated, said he thought the whole scene appeared strange.

In an emotional two-hour hearing, U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland sentenced Dana Deegan to 10 years and one month in prison for the death of her infant son. Deegan, 35, pleaded guilty in December to second-degree murder in the October 1998 death of the infant, known as "Baby Doe" or "Baby Moses."  Hovland, who appeared at times to be fighting back tears, commended Deegan for turning her life around and being a good mother to her three daughters since the time of the crime.
